The site need promoting outside of the usual web based forums if its actually going to achieve its full potential.

Of all of my shooting contacts, acquaintances and buddies less than a 15-18% bother with internet forums.

I believe the usual comments have already been made by a number of members about seeing the all to familiar names on here from the other countrysports forums.

How this required promotion can be achieved without incurring some considerable costs, I wouldn't have a clue. But it is a necessity.

Success is not guaranteed, nor is it likely if those responsible for its achievement, believe that just doing the same old link posting will promote the site to that huge potential membership that don't play on the internet.

Never having been in the position of having to find a place to go beating or picking up, I've always been invited , and never having been in the position of being unable to fill those spots in the team, Ive always knew enough people to fill the vacancy's. I am unfamiliar with why those wishing to begin find it so difficult.

Admin agree totally that internet is not the be all and end all to finding a position on a shoot.
That is why we have a telephone dedicated to PuBS only, a membership form for non PC owners so that they can be recorded on our mebership base, and we are investigating the various country show and game fairs set ups so that a show stand can do the rounds and enlist more people and shoots.
Whilst advertising is expensive we are also considering advertisements in the shooting press to engage with a wider potential membership base.

I would say your rather lucky Doc.
Being a newcomer to the sport, even having family that are farmers, albeit in Lincs, its hard to find a way into Beating, Shooting etc, which lets face it can sometimes be very clicky and difficult to become excepted into.
As a growing industry and sport, folk should open their arms and welcome newcomers with enthusiasm, sadly this isn`t always the case, so sites like this are a lifeline, a doorway into the sport.
Maybe those with so many contacts in the sport, could help by encouraging folk to take a look at these forums, use word of mouth at shoots etc.
Just a thought eh?

Nick

How are you protecting the details you hold about members? Are you compliant with the Data Protection Act? It would be worrying that somebody could hold information without making sure that all protection is in place.

Our main membership base records are recorded manually and cannot be accessed on the internet for security reasons as you obviously appreciate.
Contact details such as addresses and telephone numbers will not be available to any opportunist hackers.
We are registering with the Data Protection Registrar.

Business Cards are one of the ways to go about boosting membership

We get ours for next to nothing from a company called Vista Print'and we hand them around like confetti. Any members who want some just have to ask. They even give you the first 250 for free. Its something thats well worth looking into.
I agree with the person who said that the trick is getting hold of members who are new to forums.

Thanks for that Bodger- we have already ordered some promotional items from Vista Print- seems a pretty useful contact. Lanyards are the next thing maybe- gundog handlers always need more- Nick C loses about 5 a season he reckons- slip leads as well.
