mine has to be seeing treacle do her first retrieve on her first shoot on a freshly shot bird, watching her work the field, catch the scent and nose go up, spotting it and going straight to it, slight moment of panic as i wonder will she pick it up, shouting encouragement down the field to her and feeling sooooo happy when after a few sniffs she picks it up and carries it back head held high. it was a perfect retrieve and i was even more amazed when i realised that it was a pricked bird and that was why she had hesitated
Well, I have to say that meeting a couple of very lovely ladies (and I mean that most sincerely, folks! [Who said that?]) was the highlight of my season.
Rejecting my proposals (to only take the high birds/cocks) was rather sad.
The second highest highlight was to see my young pup achieving what everyone else told me was impossible. Even my gundog-trainer father derided me! But so far, young Jake's come through with flying colours!
I may well be caught out next season though .... but a 'session' today showed to me just how intelligent/good he is. I appreciate that I must not let up and must continue his 'education'. Just hope (as my website-building business has suddenly taken off!) that I have time to continue with his *gentle* training.
A retrieve such as yours, teakybeak, would be wonderful....but he's still a tad too small. He has retrieved a dead pigeon, which he did beautifully, but pheasants are beyond him!
I know I've broken all the established "rules", but I just hope he continues to be such a brilliant little dog. If not, it's my fault and I accept that.
A colourful chappy, who no doubt enjoyed life, but a sad ending.

The best moment of the season for us was taking Siwann out beating for the first time, (she had been trained with trialing in mind but is prone to making noise when waiting for the cast off) and seeing her enjoying her first shoot day. You see showed me that my trialing hopes for her were just confetti and that she makes a tidy beating dog.............. a lesson I needed to learn _________________ All the Best

Mine was attending my first shoot, with my little black lab. She was very nervous of the gun fire to start with, but settled down nicely, once she realised no-one was going to hurt her, and she might even get a bird to retrieve. We only had 3 days this year, but each day was completely different.
I met some great people, who gave me some good advice.
I now know what to work on for next year, which I am really looking forward to.
Mine was the last day of the season, sole picker up on a small friendly family shoot at Chedworth, pheasants dropping all around me and two springers and a lab running back and forth delivering birds.
Also seeing the meat balls in bolgnese sauce, with rice, which I cooked for the beating team disappearing quickly down their gullets - sorry the old slow cooker blew up and we didnt have enough for fourths! _________________ PuBS Admin (Nick)
I see most of us are getting our best moments out of seeing our dogs do what we've trained them to do.
Well done everyone!
Mine was similar it was the last shoot of the season and I don't normally use mine for retrieving as I just want him as a beating dog, though I do practice with him. We had a bird down on the lake it had been an icy night and no other dog was willing to get into the water to pick the bird up. So as a final try they asked if mine would, knowing that he'll swim through everything, lo and behold I pointed him in the right direction and he dived straight through breaking the thin ice sheet to get this bird out and retrieved it beautifully!
I have a poor photograph of him coming out of the water with the bird, but I was the wrong side of him for the sun and it was pretty low at the time. I'll get it organised and post it up later on.
Ok here's the photo as promised. the lad who was trying to take the bird off Louis backed off just after the photo was taken and he brought it straight back to me and waited until asked to drop!
Mine was wandering back to the gamelarder after everyone had gone on the last shoot of the season with a glass of whisky and thinking I don't have to work the weekends again till July and Bloody ell I need a holiday
